Plebeian Grandstand

Who ever said that France is full of pussies? I'm sure they'd revise their opinion if they heard the relentless riffs and heavy hits of Plebeian Grandstand. Brought to you all the way from Toulouse, France, these fellows sure know how to do heavy music right. Since the band's formation in 2005, they've released a six-song EP titled The Vultures Riot and a full-length, How Hate is Hard to Define, both on Lacrymal Records. Recently, they released a split with NY band, Divider, and Idaho sludge-kings, Bone Dance on Throat Ruiner Records, which is one of my favorite releases of the year. They have an awesome sound, with elements of sludge, mathy hardcore, and even a little bit of black metal here and there.

Gold//Tongue Premier Videos

Finally, my friends, we have something for you that is of relevance to the band!
Last Saturday, July 23, was the premier of Gold//Tongue. We performed live at the Hollow in Fresno, California for a crowd of awesome people. Much thanks to Jacob Lee from Fill-in-the-blank Core, who filmed and edited a video of the set, which you may watch below. Keep an eye out for more Gold//Tongue stuff coming up!

Guest Review: Puerto Rico Flowers by Kevynn Gomez

"Gothic Revival" is one of the term used to categorize Josh Sharkey III's solo project, Puerto Rico Flowers. Reminiscent of 80's goth and new wave, PRF started on the right foot, issuing their first EP, 4, on Fan Death Records, and indie label respected for their ability to sway away from the mainstream hardcore scene as well as house eclectinc bands like Birds of Maya and Ringo Deathstarr.

4 was released in January 2010, so it's not new to the lo-fi scene. But what makes the project unique is the effective song lineup and refreshing rehash of a classic sound nearly abandoned these days. Sharkey, of past Clockcleaner ilk, exudes modern-day goth rock with a prominent synth edge to give a well-rounded feel.

Wise Cub

Many apologies about the absence. Long stints of time on the freeway and limited internet access make blogging quite a chore. But we're back! This time, The Patron is going to chill out a little bit and talk about a recent project called Wise Cub.

Last month, a Los Angeles-based band, The Harm, called it quits. A tear shed for the deceased...
The silver lining to this tragedy is the birth of a new - and possibly better - project. Front man Scott Goldbaum split off and began writing some pretty, acoustic indie music under the moniker "Wise Cub," performing with help from friends Aleena Bissett, Lori Koutouratsas, and Roget ChahayĆ©d. I, for one, am a fan, and I'm glad I caught it early so I can watch where this one goes.

Psalters: the Cry of the Exodus

Psalters

It is immensely difficult to properly describe a band with as many complicated ideals and valuable messages as Psalters. But, I will try to provide as much insight as possible on this group of artists who are both forward-thinking and deeply rooted in the traditional.

Before I go any further, a disclaimer/warning/suggestion: If you are not even slightly interested in the purposes behind Psalters, but merely in the music that they create, skip to the link and picture below and read on. Otherwise, as you were. I do suggest you continue reading, though, as I find them quite interesting.

The Libra Patriarch Prophet Lord Archbishop Apostle Visionary Mystic Psychic Saint Royal Robertson

Untitled work that's featured in the album art for Sufjan Stevens' The Age of Adz

I don't think we've done any posts about any artists working in purely visual media, so lemme give it a shot and introduce you to Prophet Royal Robertson.

First off, let me make sure you don't try to read this as a review. This guy was one of those people that you could never ever figure out, especially with never having met him and only learning about him from various internet sources. So if i ever tried to review his work, it would inevitably be wrong.

So the story of Royal Robertson is an interesting one. He was born in Louisiana and apprenticed as a sign painter in his late teens. To make a very long and sorrowful story short, he married Adell Brent in 1955 and had 11 children with her. After 19 years of marriage, Adell left Royal for another man, taking all 11 children with her and her new man to Texas.

Lord Okkoto

When was the last time you heard an interesting band come out of Missouri? There ain't none. Except for Okkoto.

Resting Bell

I don't know how you guys feel about Ambient/Textural/Experimental stuff, but I know that I am rather found of it. There was awhile where this sort of thing was all i listened to, along with a  lot of straight noise music. Resting Bell is a NetLabel based out of Berlin germany that specializes in really atmospheric ambient stuff. Nothing to noisy or too busy, but all together wonderful or awesome.

How Tragic

While doing some research into The Kingsford Run (fantastic, but a discussion for another time) I came across the clothing company which sponsors them. Then I listened to all the other bands that City of Horror (the clothing company) sponsored. They were all good... but then I came across this band How Tragic.
Mind sufficiently blown.

Tragic Ends

Everyone's a fan of some sweet, wholesome hardcore, yeah?

Well, somewhat far from wholesome, but still pretty sweet, is the new demo from Bay Area bastards, Tragic Ends.

As I Have Writ

“Thou shalt never know thy fate as I have writ,
Until the reaper’ scythe you have acquaintanced!”
He said to silence over-aspiring wit
Which, through barren fields of half-thought thoughts, pranced.
“For the lay’s path, by thy destiny lit
Will deviate and stray, and death’s heart be lanced.”
The wits retort, meant fully; “For this we strive:
Immortal, for eternity, to live.”

LeATHERMOUTH

Some 4-5 years ago, My Chemical Romance was my default band. *Turn on something to listen to, scroll to MCR*. Now things aren't quite the same, although I still think MCR is way awesome, especially "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" (I may be biased though). I spend most of my time now listening to more aggressive stuff, or stuff that's entirely different.

This band, LeATHERMOUTH, came up a little while back, followed with, "Yeah its Frank Iero from MCR's other band". The name drop there certainly made it more interesting, so I had to check it out.  I am more than pleased.

Im a huge fan of the unrefined, somewhat screechy vocals, the songs are shorter than the general 3:30, but not as short as some 1:30 long songs you find in a lot of aggressive music. I find it kind of refreshing actually because if you  get into a song, or a riff it's not gone before you can say, "Man this part is cool!".

The songs are punchy, and for the most part, fast. They start, and just go, without stopping our slowing, and are in your face.  To me, it has a lot of that 1-2-3-GO! sort of feel that you'd fine in, Some Girls, or Lewd Acts maybe. The song has a point, and it delivers it, no hidden musical themes here. The "punk" feel certainly isn't the most original thing but, who cares!

I read that Frank wasn't in the band when it started, and was going to sign them to his label. However after their original front man failed at getting his job done, Frank took his place. They are now signed to Epitaph, instead of Mr. Iero's label.

That being said, i'm not sure how much writing Frank does here, but good job to all involved!

So here you go,
LeATHERMOUTH
