Many apologies about the absence. Long stints of time on the freeway and limited internet access make blogging quite a chore. But we're back! This time, The Patron is going to chill out a little bit and talk about a recent project called Wise Cub.
Last month, a Los Angeles-based band, The Harm, called it quits. A tear shed for the deceased...
The silver lining to this tragedy is the birth of a new - and possibly better - project. Front man Scott Goldbaum split off and began writing some pretty, acoustic indie music under the moniker "Wise Cub," performing with help from friends Aleena Bissett, Lori Koutouratsas, and Roget ChahayƩd. I, for one, am a fan, and I'm glad I caught it early so I can watch where this one goes.
Being only a little more than a month old, there isn't a lot of material out and about, but he did have a live set of his recorded (which you can get off his bandcamp), and there are several videos of him on YouTube.
My first exposure to this fellow was through a live video of him playing his song, "Forest Home." The song begins with a sweet little melody featuring some very impressive finger picking skills, alternating with some soft, Sufjan Stevens-sounding singing. It sounds fantastic, and it carries on with a similar sound for a while. When the song reaches its dramatic climax, however, you may have make a conscious effort to keep you mouth closed. He plays a a super-fast finger-picking guitar part (which would be difficult for most) while singing longingly over it. He doesn't miss a beat, and he's constantly on pitch. The talent is evident, and coupled with the some of the most dexterous guitar playing I've seen there is created some very beautiful noise.
The rest of his music is equally dramatic, mostly dealing with girl-troubles and heartbreak. It's not so technical or flashy but it is how it should be. Scott's voice matches his music perfectly, and the songs are written in a way that even many who generally aren't huge fans of acoustic music might find Wise Cub aurally appealing. My advice to you is to download his live set at Guitar Merchant off of Bandcamp, along with the other song they recorded and have available on his Facebook. Listen and enjoy!
